Third baseman John Beckwith rocketed 2 home runs and had 4 RBI as the Play Ball
destroyed the Seattle Okanogans XII by a score of 18 to 6 at Stars Park
It was a good day for Play thanks to Beckwith. He laced a one-base hit in the
1st inning, lost the ball over the fence for three runs in the 2nd inning,
laced a single in the 3rd inning and smashed a bases-empty ‘big-fly’ (his
16th of the season) in the 5th inning. Play bats were hot in the 2nd inning
which saw them plate 13 runs on 11 hits and the 5th inning when they had 4
runs on 5 hits. Seattle was out-hit by Play, 23 hits to 8.
The win was credited to Howie Camnitz(5-5) who went 8 and 1/3 innings allowing
6 runs. Deacon Phillippe(3-5) was the loser. He surrendered 6 hits and 2
walks in 1 and 1/3 innings.
‘I’ve spent a lot of time in the cage and made some adjustments and they’ve
paid off,’ Beckwith said. ‘I just take the same approach up there. I don’t
overanalyze it. I go up there, see the ball and try to put a good swing on
Ryan Dempster racked up an impressive total of 14 strikeouts at Chase Field
as the Edmonton Prospects beat the Pearl River Gamblers 4 to
Dempster(21-14) was simply too much for the Pearl River batters. He allowed
just 5 hits and 4 walks in 9 innings. Neither team managed to score after
the 4th inning.
Yovani Gallardo(6-13) ended up with the loss. Although losing the contest, he
whiffed 10 batters in 6 and 1/3 innings. Dempster was pleased with his
performance. He noted, ‘I had good zip on my pitches. Just as important, my
location was right on. The fans really got into the game too – that always
helps me. Now, if I can only do that again in my next outing.’
Back to the ’90s
One run was the difference at The Astrodome as the big mac attack defeated
the Plantation Pigs 3 to 2.
Kevin Brown(27-5) gave big mac a solid outing. He was reached for 7 hits and 5
walks in 7 innings. Plantation had a chance to come back in the 9th but they
came up short.
Brown got help from Troy Percival who was credited with his 13th save. Mike
Mussina(17-11) took the loss. He was unable to control the big mac offense
and allowed 9 hits and 3 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings.
Adrian Beltre ripped 2 home runs and had 3 RBI as the RDA Clippers defeated the
Tigers Love Children by a score of 5 to 4 at Fenway Park
Beltre had a good day at the plate. He ripped a base-knock in the 1st inning,
smashed a two-run homer in the 3rd inning and lofted a solo-blast ‘downtown’
(his 5th of the season) in the 5th inning. RDA managed 11 hits in their
Armando Reynoso(4-1) allowed 4 runs in 6 innings, and picked up the victory.
Trevor Hoffman earned the save, his 6th. Kent Bottenfield(1-3) was the
losing pitcher. He allowed 3 homeruns in 6 and 1/3 innings of work.
