Rogers Hornsby smashed 3 home runs and had 6 RBI at Stars Park (NeL) as the
Play Ball belted the Scruffy Furballs III by the count of 16 to 2.
Hornsby enjoyed a great day at the plate. He lined a one-base hit in the 2nd
inning, lofted a solo-blast ‘downtown’ in the 3rd inning, blasted a two-run
home run in the 4th inning and smashed a two-run homer (his 9th of the
season) in the 6th inning. Play kept the scorekeepers busy in the 2nd inning
which saw them plate 5 runs on 6 hits and the 4th inning with 4 runs on 3
hits. Play had 18 hits overall, while Scruffy had 8.
The win went to Tim Lincecum(5-1) who allowed 2 runs in 6 and 2/3 innings.
Johan Santana(7-3) was charged with the loss. ‘We really needed this win’
said Jesse Ventura. ‘That first drink of water at the end of a drought sure
does taste good!’
John Buck smacked 3 home runs and had 4 RBI at Wrigley Field where the
Brody’s Ballbusters beat the DownTown EggRollzz by the score of 11 to
Buck enjoyed a great day at the plate. Every time he came up in the latter
innings, the crowd was on their feet cheering. He cracked a solo homerun in
the 3rd inning, cracked a two-run shot in the 5th inning and blasted a solo
shot (his 31st of the season) in the 6th inning. Brody’s had many
opportunities throughout the game and scored in 6 separate innings.
‘Buck led the way – we just jumped on his back and let him take us,’ Hanson
said. ‘I’m glad I don’t have to face him. I’m glad he’s on my team.’

Darryl Kile carried a no-hitter into the 6th inning and shortstop Mark Loretta
had 4 hits as the Quad City River Kings topped the East Wareham Pile Drivers
by a score of 6 to 2 at Riverfront Stdm
Kile(20-9) earned his pay with a solid performance for Quad City. He was
reached for 5 hits and 3 walks in 7 and 2/3 innings. The right-handed Kile
lost his no-hit bid when Rey Ordonez singled with nobody out in the 6th
inning. Quad City ended up with 13 hits for the game while East Wareham had
Rick Honeycutt was credited with his 4th save. Bill Krueger(7-16) was given
the loss. He was knocked around by Quad City, allowing 10 hits and 2 walks
in 4 innings.
Quad City now has a record of 83-67. With the loss East Wareham now has a
record of 83-67.
Rickey Henderson launched 2 home runs and had 5 RBI at Coors Field as the
Happy Jacks 5th Hammer beat the Quebec Reds 12 to 10.
Henderson had a big day with his bat. He belted a three-run homer in the 2nd
inning and smashed a bases-empty ‘big-fly’ (his 3rd of the season) in the 4th
inning. Quebec was not lacking for run support as they scored in 5 separate
innings, yet victory eluded them as they seemed to forget that pitching is
also needed to win ballgames.
The winning pitcher was Allen Watson(2-1) who allowed 3 runs in 5 and 2/3
innings. Doug Brocail was credited with his 7th save. Pedro Astacio(3-3) was
charged with the loss. He was knocked around pretty good, giving up 7 runs
in 4 innings.
‘I didn’t have my best stuff but sometimes you just get lucky,’ Watson said,
‘this was one of those times.’
