All-Time Greats VI | box score
Mickey Mantle smashed 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI as the Wynkoop Winos staged a
dramatic comeback over the Limassol Skylarks by a score of 10 to 9 at Dunn
Wynkoop won the game with a rally in the 9th inning scoring 3 runs. After two
were out Turkey Stearnes started the attack as he drew a walk. Norm Cash
stepped up next and he was hit by a pitch. Mantle then lofted a three-run
bomb (his 49th of the season). Limassol was not lacking for run support as
they scored in 7 separate innings, yet victory eluded them as they seemed to
forget that pitching is also needed to win ballgames.
Hoyt Wilhelm(15-12) picked up the victory, allowing 5 runs in 4 and 2/3
innings. Sparky Lyle(1-8) was given the loss in relief. Hank was very happy
after the game, ‘It’s great to come back and win it in your last at bats! Our
guys just wouldn’t give up. And did you see the fans – one minute they’re
laughing and screaming down all sorts of unprintable stuff at our guys – the
next minute – SILENCE! Yes sir, a very enjoyable win this afternoon!’
Jonathan Sanchez was able to finish what he started and was credited with a
complete game at Target Field where the Albuquerque Isotopes beat the
Batavia Muckdogs by the score of 10 to 7.
Albuquerque tallied 8 runs in the 4th inning when they had 7 base hits. The
key at-bat was by Wilson Betemit, who elicited a roar from the hometown fans
when he lost the ball over the fence for three runs (his 21st of the season).
Albuquerque banged out 15 hits on the afternoon.
The win was credited to Sanchez(16-13) who went the whole way allowing 7 runs.
Jake Westbrook(10-7) was charged with the loss. He was knocked around pretty
good, giving up 8 runs in 3 innings.
Albert Pujols rocketed 3 homeruns and had 6 RBI but his offense was not enough
to carry Batavia to victory.
Back to the ’90s
Chili Davis ripped 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI and Randy Johnson allowed just 3
hits as the c winchester boomers clobbered the outmatched Papa’s Little Girls
II, 14 to 1.
Davis provided much of the offense. He smacked a three-run homer in the 1st
inning and smashed a solo-shot out of the park (his 40th of the season) in
the 5th inning. c winchester finished with 15 hits in the victory.
Johnson(20-11) was the winner allowing 1 run for the game. The loss was
charged to Jim Deshaies(10-13). ‘We didn’t have a whole lot of chances
today,’ Papa said. ‘Johnson just was too much for our guys.’
