All-Time Greats VI | box score
Right fielder Kiki Cuyler had 4 hits and Pedro Martinez pitched 9 strong
innings at Shibe Park as the Escanaba LeSabres beat the Philadelphia
Stars 1 to 0.
Escanaba set the tone of the game in the first inning scoring a single run on
2 hits. After an out was recorded, Lou Whitaker doubled. Chief Bender then
uncorked a wild pitch. Cuyler then smacked a one-base hit scoring the run.
That early scoring was all that Martinez(20-14) needed. Escanaba finished
with just 6 hits in the victory.
Bender(17-16) absorbed the loss. Bob Cos was very impressed with his pitcher,
Martinez, ‘He had unusually good pitch placement this afternoon. It was
almost unfair – but a beautiful game to watch from where I sat’
Wright had a big day at the plate. He smashed a two-run homer in the 1st
inning, blasted a two-run home run in the 2nd inning and lofted a solo-blast
‘downtown’ (his 21st of the season) in the 6th inning. Nevada provided
plenty of action in the 1st inning when they had 4 runs on 5 hits and the 6th
inning which saw them plate 8 runs on 5 hits. Nevada had a total of 17 hits
for the game.
Carpenter(9-9), allowing 2 runs for the game, picked up the victory. C.J.
Wilson(9-7) was the loser. He served up 4 gopher balls in 1 and 1/3 innings.
Back to the ’90s

banged out 11 hits on the afternoon.
Pedro Martinez(20-15) was tagged with the loss. He gave up 4 runs and 4 hits
in 5 and 1/3 innings.

outscored the Bronx Bombers in 12 innings 9 to 8.
The score was tied at 8 after nine. Abingdon was victorious in the 12th
inning. Mike Felder drew a walk. Felder stole second with some aggressive
base running. Abingdon continued their aggressive style with another stolen
base. Tim Flannery came up and he would hit into a fielders choice giving
Abingdon the victory as 19,354 happy fans celebrated wildly. Abingdon ended
up with 15 hits for the game while Bronx had 12.
Bob Tewksbury(10-11) went 4 innings allowing 2 runs for the win. Greg
Minton(7-6) ended up with the loss in relief. ‘After the stretch we have
been through lately, this victory is especially sweet’ offered Kim Hoover.
Now, we just have to make this the norm – not the exception!’
